The Army will be exhibiting its armor vehicle’s, weapon’s, providing information’s on career prospects and early registration for their Askar Wataniah unit wherelse the FT Arts and Culture Department will be providing entertainment shows with local artists for the public.

Under the streamlining exercise, the Wanita, Youth, Puteri and Putera movements will form a joint committee to operate as a single group without having to merge, he said.

The MIC chief also said the four movements would each form a volunteer corps to assist the party in its social work.

“These are some of the changes that we have to make in order to better serve the community,” he said when opening the Wanita MIC, Youth, Puteri and Putera annual general assemblies simultaneously at Putra World Trade Centre here Sunday.

On Kelab Rakan MIC, Samy Vellu said there were no formalities involved such as registration because it would be formed throughout the country by non-MIC members.

“It will operate as a club but with certain regulations. The club will be open to all races and age groups, and will not be a political group. It will be free from politics,” he said.

He said the club would cater for people who adopted “non-partisan and non-racial politics”, especially among educated and urban youths.

Samy Vellu also ordered the four movements to prepare a “strategy for victory” plan of action within two months to face the next general election.

He also told the movements to aggressively register voters.

“Our mission is to recapture all the parliamentary and state seats we lost in the last general election and deliver the Indian votes to Barisan Nasional,” he said.

“The Barisan leadership is counting on us to deliver the Indian votes. We need to deliver,” he added.

Students of public and private universities as well as colleges were encouraged to submit their ideas.

This project is about giving youths the chance to come up with business proposals which will benefit the community.
The projects must be sustainable for social development. BSN may consider funding the project if it’s feasible.
Contestants could choose to submit their input from various categories in the competition, including education, environment and livelihood.
Submissions must be made in a group of four people and must be endorsed by their respective institutions. Six participants will then be shortlisted and sent for a two-day workshop with BSN.
A total of RM100,000 worth of prizes await the winners and submissions are open from 1st July 2010 to 30th September 2010.

According to veteran lawyer Karpal Singh, Tian Chua’s Batu parliamentary seat should still be declared vacant although the High Court on Thursday had reduced his RM3,000 fine to RM2,000 for assaulting a policeman.

“The Constitution is very clear, if you are fined RM2,000 and more, or jail one year and more, you will be disqualified,” he said.
Article 48 of the Federal Constitution states that a member of parliament will be disqualified if he is sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than one year or to a fine of not less than RM2,000 and has not received a free pardon.

“RM2,000 is the cut off point. His seat would have been saved if the fine is less by one sen or RM1,” he said adding that the High Court judge might have misinterpreted the Constitution.

He said Tian Chua could only appeal against the High Court’s decision if he obtained the leave from the court.
“However the appeal must only be based on the point of law,” he said.

“He has 14 days to do something about this. If he did not appeal within these 14 days, he can be deemed disqualified,” said Karpal.

Tian Chua’s counsel Amer Hamzah Arshad, who wanted to seek clarifications from the High Court judge yesterday told reporters that he was informed by the judge that his grounds were clear and there was no need for clarifications.
On Thursday, Tian Chua’s another counsel Ranjit Singh had told reporters that Tian Chua might only lose his seat if the fine was RM2,001 or more.

Tian Chua had paid the RM2,000 fine on the same day.

Judge Datuk Ghazali Cha on Thursday allowed Tian Chua’s appeal against the magistrate’s court’s sentence.

In his ruling, Ghazali had said a by-election would be needed if the sentence passed by the magistrate was upheld. He had also set aside the six months’ jail term imposed by the magistrate.

Tian Chua, whose real name is Chua Tian Chang, claimed trial at the magistrate’s court to biting constable Rosyaidi Anuar at the entrance to the Parliament complex at 10.45am on Dec 11, 2007.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail said the construction of the underpass gave priority to road users although it involved a national treasure.

“Every day we face problems because of this wall, getting to the office late, so this is just a matter of which one is the priority to us and the government,” he said Thursday.

The underpass will be an alternative route linking Jalan Pudu to Cheras will reduce congestion at Jalan Hang Tuah.

Construction will be carried out in stages and the project is expected to be completed in December 2012.

PuteraMIC WP has embarked on a Career Awareness Program to promote various fields of education and career to students and adults alike targeting SPM and STPM leavers.

Many students and parents are with an impression that the most demanding and secured career are of “doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, teachers and accountants”. While this inevitably true to some point, there are other professional career options which are equally demanding and rewarding. As such, Putera MIC WP has embarked on few campaign cum program to educate not only SPM & STPM students and their parents but also other keen individuals on prospect of a different career and associated education besides the generic and famous “doctor, pharmacist, lawyer, teacher and accountant”. These programs will include seminar and real-time experiences to various career options.

The first career option in Career Awareness Program cum Campaign is Piloting. “Pilot for a Day” is seminar cum real-time experience as a pilot. Besides having career professionals sharing the different options available in the aeronautical industry through the first half of the seminar, selected participants will be given an opportunity to be seated on a cockpit of a plane and fly with our Putera WP pilots for about 20 minutes. Putera MIC WP’s “Pilot for a Day” will be on a first come first serve basis and limited to 25 participants with only 18 seats made available to experience the real-time cockpit and flying.

Ahmad Fuad said this after the residents submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s political secretary Datuk Shahlan Ismail.

Shahlan had attended a meeting with some 40 NGO representatives and other Brickfields stakeholders to find out their objections to the proposal.

He also assured them that he would speak to the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin and the mayor about the matter.

“Once I have heard both sides of the story, I will meet the PM to discuss the matter after his return from the United States,” he said.

Shahlan added that he wanted to visit the people and feel the atmosphere of the place to better assess the situation.

“Changes today have to be better than yesterday’s situation. All projects should benefit the people and it has to be value for money,” he said.

During the three-hour session, stakeholders from residents’ associations, religious bodies, schools, traders and cultural organisations put forth their objections and views about the proposed development in the area.

Among the key issues brought up were safety, parking woes, congestion and the tranquility of Brickfields. Residents are suggesting that flyovers be built connecting KL Sentral with Jalan Travers and the Federal Highway.

A representative from the trading community, K. Jyothi, said 40 out of 116 business owners in Brickfields had their licences cancelled.

“After the directive for traders to move to a plot of land on Jalan Chan Ah Tong, these people’s licences were cancelled.

“They have been asked to relocate to Cheras and they cannot afford to do so,” he said.

Shahlan said he understood the adversities the traders would face in light of the situation.

Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) representative Godfrey Ooi said he hoped the government would look at the problems that will arrive once the one-way street is implemented.

“I am sure all the cars cannot wait for us to cross the roads and just how many bridges can you construct for our convenience?” Ooi, who is MAB deputy executive director said.

The meeting was also held to launch a new organisation, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Masyarakat Bersepadu Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor that looks into the welfare of people who need assistance.

“Our aim is to help people who do not have the avenues to approach certain issues,” chairman Zakaria Salleh said.

He also said the organisation would help the Brickfields community to solve its problems.

The event, themed “Books: Building the World of Tomorrow”, is on from now till March 28 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC). There are plenty of good bargains on all kinds of books and educational tools both from local and foreign publishers.

Occupying five halls, the book fair features 856 booths, out of which 128 are taken up by foreign publishers.

Readers’ heaven: The book fair is set to attract about two million people this time around.

Throughout the fair, there will also be many events organised by individual publishers such as book launches and appearances by authors and celebrities, to attract more visitors.

An International Conference on Children’s Books 2010 themed Children’s Literacy in the Changing World will take place at the venue today and tomorrow.

The conference is organised by the Malaysian Board on Books for Young People (MBBY), in cooperation with the National Book Council of Malaysia and the Malaysian Book Industry Council.

The conference is an ideal platform for those who have chosen to devote their creative energy to writing, illustrating, marketing and promoting books for children.

Participants will be able to gain insights into new and innovative ways of production and promotion by learning from experienced professionals and exchanging ideas with them.

The fair’s organising committee chairman, Datuk Ivan Hoe, said last year, the fair attracted 1.5 million people and the organisers were expecting a two million crowd this year.

He said the book fair, which was going into its 29th year, was the biggest ever held in South-East Asia, and was endorsed by the Malaysia Book of Records.

“Having such a fair is a big boost to the reading community in the country and it also inculcates the reading and discussion culture, promotes a knowledgeable community and competitive work culture with high moral intregrity,” he said during an interview on March 19.

Hoe said the economic downturn had not affected the retail sale of books as people still bought books.

“We must cherish our intellectual food as much as we like our physical food,” he said, adding that the International Book Fair was becoming a trademark and annual event for some families and people.

Hoe also said the reading trend among Malaysians was improving, although the country had only achieved half the target set by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to be listed as a reading nation.

The target requires a nation to have 1% publication of its total population.

Currently Malaysia has about 15,000 publications, while the total population is about 27 million.

“Although just halfway, people are more ready and open to reading. And we must remember the Internet is also a big space of reading material,” he said.

The book fair was opened on Saturday by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Its patron is the Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Admission to the fair is free.
