SPM12 Approved but what was it about?
Now that the SPM12 is approved, many are confused with the recent announcement of 10+2 subjects that are allowed to be taken in SPM.
There are 6 core subjects which is Malay, English, Mathematics, Islamic Studies or Moral, History and Science that has to be taken by all student. However, Science stream students are exempted from taking Science. Which means, Science stream students has 5 core subjects and Arts stream students has 6 core subjects.
Upon that, since the limit of subjects that could be taken in SPM is 10. Therefore, Science stream students has the choice of choosing 5 elective subjects and Arts stream students are given 4 elective subjects to choose.
The additional 2 subjects that are allowed to be taken is only Tamil Language, Tamil Literature, Chinese Language or Chinese Literature. Student could also choose to take only either one of it.
The catch is, obtaining a good result in these subjects would not give the particular student a higher chance to be entitle for a Government scholarship under the new plan. The scholarship merit will be only based on the 10 subjects.
The new Government scholarship plan is much better than the previous one that has been based on only quota system. The new plan has more chances for eligible student.
The new 10+2 SPM subject policy is fair as it allows the Chinese and Indian students to take their language subjects in SPM which is a government recognize certificate. This helps them in the future to be a Chinese or Tamil broadcaster, teacher, writer or so whatever.
Its also fair on the scholarship merit system that be based only on the 10 subjects and not on those additional 2 subjects that are allowed to be taken.
Initially, students were given scholarship based on quota and the amount of A’s scored. Therefore, many students rushed to take more subject just to get as many A’s as possible. This scrubs such culture and scholars will be chosen based on the quality and not the quantity of A’s they bagged.
